There’s a fairly bare-bones story about stopping a terrible evil, but the Unbound is firmly gameplay-focused, with little in the way of character and narrative development. In Unbound, you’re Soli, a young mage who has the ability to open up circle-shaped portals between two worlds – think Dr Strange, if you’re into the Marvel universe. It was one of the standout indies of that year for us, so it’s great to see it getting a wide release across all major platforms. It’s a lovely indie puzzle platformer – here’s our review.īack in 2020, Unbound: Worlds Apart was one of those games we really wanted to try at trade shows, but as those weren’t happening we played a Steam demo instead and did a developer interview as well. A real-life plushie of Soli was made and sent around the world as part of the World Tour project.Unbound: Worlds Apart launched on the PC and Switch last year, and has now made it over to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One as well.Soli's name comes from the word "solitude", likely referencing Soli's troubled relations with the villagers of Rhu and losing their family.Soli's design was made in a way that it would be easy to remember and draw for a 4 year old. While designed to be of ambiguous gender so that the player can choose what they feel like, the game's developers mostly use male pronouns for Soli.A very early concept of Soli showed them wearing purple robes. One of the trailers depicts Soli's brother being killed by Arawen, serving as their main motivation. With Leyrah's help, Soli succeeded, routing demons from Vaiya and Sanarya. Unbeknownst to them, Arawen was their father. Together with Brom, they opened a portal to Umberra and tasked Soli with killing Arawen, the king of demons. She turned out to have been trapped in a crystal, but thanks to Soli's exploration of the Mage Academy she was ultimately freed. They succeeded and were allowed to go to Sanarya in order to get Zarana on their side. He guided him to the Mage Order's refuge nearby, where Soli met Borua, who gave them a quest to open Brom's door. Soli, who was absent, looking for Leyrah, survived and met with Karra just prior to her death.Īfter the invasion from Umberra, Soli found the cartographer by the name of Dahj. They killed most villagers and burned the village down. One day, when the Village of Rhu was to host Vaiya's Guardian, Brom, in cleansing of its crystal, a portal opened, releasing Arawen and its demons to Vaiya. At some point, Soli met Lyho through their parents. Because of this, Soli didn't have many friends, as they were seen as too different, to the point of bullying, according to Chym. Soli turned out to have magical powers, supposedly opening random portals and summoning rain in the middle of a drought. She died during childbirth, but the child survived and was sent to Vaiya, where the villagers of Rhu found them and raised the child as their own. Soli was born to Arana and Arawen, the former of which tried to escape the latter's insanity in Umberra. Additionally, Soli doesn't hestitate to help children who used to bully them for being different than them. Their selfless decision to aid the Mage Order, and risk their life and safety to save the Lost Villagers implies they care more about others than themselves. The robe's edges are slightly brighter than the rest, with glowing runes inscribed on them.Īs Soli is a silent protagonist, not much is known about their personality. The end of this hood is a source of light, visible even in darkness. They wear a crimson-colored robe with the hood covering most of their head. Soli is a short black mage with glowing white eyes and a blue symbol on their belly.
